So. My computer hates me. It's missing a file it needs to boot, and after repairing it with the Windows XP CD, and copying over the file it needed, it now endlessly cycles through the first two boot-up screens. Grrr! Thank goodness for friends who are willing to come over and try and fix it. ^_^; Hopefully, we'll get it up again tonight.

But my girl has a job! Yay!

You have a lot of this sort of problem happen to you. I think you should start looking at the cause. For instance, is your electricity fluctuating a lot causing errors on the hard drive? Is your computer too hot, either internal fans needing dusting, or case itself sitting too near a heat register?

Ironically, this is a different computer! I've only had it for a few months. I think I might need to move it up onto the desk since it is sitting on the floor in the general vicinity of the heat register. If the power is fluctating, how would I tell?

No, I undedrstand that it's a new one, that's why I think it's weird that there's something going on with it too. Your best bet is to ask some of your computer savvy local friends to take a look at the conditions; there are utilities to check the internal temperatures and such (and kitty hair in the vents of a computer is something to keep in mind there); is it on a GOOD power strip? And even if the strip appears good, is the power outlet pretty good? Do you have any flickery lights, for instance?

There is also the possibility that there's something you do with a computer that's "bad," but I mention that only to be a completist. You do have virus and spyware protection, right?

I have no idea why the hard drive failed. ^_^;;; I do know that the friend who fixed it all up for me also replaced one of my fans (it was whining) and put a heat sink on the motherboard for me (because the fan on it was broken.) So maybe it was temperature-related.

And I am duly virus and spyware poretectioned with regular updates, and have it set up to defrag and scandisk regularily, and have no flickery lights. I think I'm going to move the tower on top on the desk, if all the cords reach comfortably.
