A random assortment of everything except the SGA, of which there is enough for its own post later. Tangentially, I read a BSG/Dead Like Me crossover a little while ago. Does anyone else remember seeing it, and have the slightest clue where I could find it?

Bruno & Boots, Hot Commodity "So let's try this again," she said, pointing to the flow chart she and Diane had specially made for the occasion. "Boots," she tapped her makeshift pointer (which Bruno thought might have once been the bone of an unfortunate previous student) against the stick figure with a blond squiggle on top of its head, "is captain of the hockey team, co-captain of the football team and captain of the swimming team," she tapped the varying sports items drawn next to the plus sign by "Boots."

BSG/GA, The Space Between "Lying in bed her fingers find their way under the cheap fabric of the clothes she's turned into nightwear, and as hard as she tries to think about Derek, she thinks about President Roslin instead."

BTVS/AtS, Les Cousins Dangereux Connor/Dawn "Connor Summers's real memories start coming back that summer.

DS, Ten Things To Get Used To "I think that maybe the biggest shock of moving north was--not the snow, not the cold, not the dark, not the isolation, not the stupendous beauty of the landscape and the eerie feeling that you're living in the middle of the Chicago Zoo because yeah, those are bears and that's a moose and those are wolves and that's a giant fucking bird, whatever it's called. It wasn't even the fact that it gets freakin' hot here in the summertime and turns into a whole different place. No, I think the biggest shock was realizing that Benton Fraser is not like other Canadians."

DS, Aurora "Sprawled out in the bed of Fraser's truck, Ray closed his eyes and for just a moment, it was like he was eighteen all over again, lying back on the hood of the Goat and watching the stars overhead, thinking about what the future held for him. "

GA, The Plan "The thing about it, though, was that it was one of Meredith's plans. Which meant it had to have a downside. And the downside of this one was that, no matter how gorgeous he was, after a month or two of sleeping with Derek every night, she had to admit that loving heterosexual sex with a man who happened to be married was starting to get boring. Or maybe terrifying. Maybe both. At once. Because that was how it worked, for Meredith. Maximum drama, maximum trauma, all the time."

Jeeves & Wooster, fanart. There is a flamingo contained within...

Jeeves & Wooster, a story told in postcards and artefacts I cannot describe the coolness of this in mere words. Go look!

Jeeves & Wooster, With Sheep "Between the gardens and the park lies rather a large ornamental lake, and in the middle of the lake is a smallish ornamental island with a few ornamental trees and bushes. On warm summer evenings, it is quite pleasant to row out to the island and bathe from the side that is away from the hall, with a sheep or five as one's only audience. What is a dashed sight less pleasant is to find, after a refreshing splash, that the small boat and all one's clothing has vanished."

Madeleine L'Engle books, Learning Fear, Polly/Emily. Snippet.

Slings & Arrows, there's an art to the laughter (there's a science) "Turned out Oliver was right. It had all started so well; love is an antidote to madness, Oliver said, and then he had held forth on the difference between madness and insanity and good old garden-variety street performer craziness in the backseat of their taxi, while Geoffrey and Ellen kissed on the other side of the seat, oblivious to anything and everything he had to say. Except that later, after, Geoffrey remembers Oliver saying that madness is, at least, attractive, and Hamlet didn't make him crazy but Ellen might have."

Huh, it's been a while. At least now I can close all my tabs, and make a dent in the bookmarked stuff. (Oh yes, there will be more later.) As usual, a bunch of Stargate: Atlantis fic, some Due South, miscellaneous others, and some truly random links.

*

Discworld, The Imperfect Mirror of Art "'Fine, fine,' growled Angua. 'Use the uniforms. But my likeness is off limits, do you understand? None of this "horny werewolf officer mooning the city" business. Vampire and werewolf lesbian officers? Werewolves hate vampires!'"

DS, Character sketches Fraser, Ray, and Ray tells us what they know. "Benton Fraser knows: how to tie a bowline knot, tiller's hitch, sheepshank or sailor's knot. Under ideal conditions, over four thousand stars can be seen with the naked eye. To make pemmican, slice your kill into long strips, knead in salt and smoke the meat over green twigs."

DS Ray Is Not Actually Graphing The History Of His Relationship With Fraser--That Would Be Pathetic, And Ray Is Not Pathetic--But If He Was Graphing It, Even Just In His Own Stressed-Out, Messed-Up Brain, It Might Look Something Like This See, if Fraser was a girl (lady, woman, whatever), Ray would have a) figured out they were having a Very Important Relationship Conversation, and also 2) known exactly what he was expected to say.

DS, Rosebud "Fraser had often ruminated on the likely circumstances of his death, and while 'trapped in an ice crevasse,' had certainly been one of them, he hadn't anticipated, 'while arguing with Ray Kowalski about Citizen Kane.' " Not deathfic, don't worry. Short and snappy.

DS, White Gloves and Wet Umbrellas, cover here. Young Stella and both Rays, and wee Frannie. Dance class and an unrealized bit of paths crossing.

DS/SGA Andthentheyhadsex #002 John/Fraser, hotel bar. Chatspam about how John Sheppard and Benton Fraser would hook up.

Firefly, Rain Dances, Little Dreamer, Therapeutic. AU, on a ranch somewhere in Montana. River/Mal.

Fried Green Tomatoes, Obligation "I wasn't sure what you wanted. I just knew what you had to get away from." Idgie was meeting her eyes now, but she was staring up defiantly, like she thought she was telling Frank Bennett. "I didn't really think about anything past getting you out of that goddamn house and into Julian's truck."

Grey's Anatomy, Two Beer Queer "A six pack of Corona, a couple of horny doctors, a pair of salmon surgery scrubs, and a redhead of questionable authenticity." Femmeslash, yay!

SGA, Bell Curve, or, Ladies Night at the Boom Boom Room, pt 6/? "In which Rodney does not believe in an elegant universe, Rodney and Jeannie actually have a moment, and John give Rodney a freebie."

SGA, Circle "John is a little bit intimdiated by how he looks when he's wearing two X chromosomes: all spare lines and pale skin." Genderswap, and some very nice Teyla characterization in this little ficlet.

SGA, some more genderswap fic, "Oddly the first leaping wrongness was who in the hell used their property allowance to bring nail polish to another galaxy?"

SGA, Complimentary, part 1/? Because what sGA fandom needs is more hookerfic. "The view is gorgeous and the city is all twinkling desert from his enormous windows, and Rodney's drunk enough to wax poetic about it--At least until the complimentary hooker shows up. 'Oh, hey,' Rodney says, 'I didn't know I got one of these, too.' "

SGA, Perimeter, part 5 of Alpha Centauri, first four parts linked at the beginning of the post. Rodney/John/Ronon series. "Rodney snorted and slammed his glass of tea down on the table. 'I’m sorry, my mistake, that was very imprecise of me. Maybe he wants to eat with one of his many girlfriends.' "

SGA, Thirst "How many minutes would a mouthful of lukewarm water add to Sheppard's lifespan? What would it feel like?"

SGA, Edges "In one way or another Rodney has always known he was going to lose John." Quietly, devastatingly effective and real, without an ounce of melodrama to spare.

SGA, Separate Sand from Salt "Screw it, Kate thought. She could only stand being professional for so long, when one of her friends was hurting like this. She laced her hand though Laura's and quickly squeezed."

SGA/Macdonald Hall, Snapshot: Reverse Polarities "The best part of this plan is," Bruno said, "if it doesn't work, and the girls break through the barriers we're putting up so that McKay can make his romantic approach to Sheppard's room--they'll just cannabalize him and we're still free!" Boots wanted to cry, but didn't, and it was very hard. "I'm going to go take a shower now." Bruno waved him off. "Don't take too long--I'm cultivating aphrodesiac plants in there."

SGA/Sports Night, Thospar "Fools." Teyla shook her head as she rose to help the doctor up. "It is Thospar's special day."

Young Wizards series by Diane Duane, Spring Cleaning Tom and Carl and a little snippet of happy domesticity. Cute!

Young Wizards, Poetry and Practice and Better When She Glows, Futurefic Nita/Kita snippets.

Young Wizards, why you so young, Nita's parents, spoilers for A Wizard Alone.

Supernatural vid to the Linkin Park song "Faint."

[livejournal.com profile] pearl_o has posted some Wilby Wonderful screencaps.

[livejournal.com profile] undermistletoe is a Smallville and Stargate: Atlantis holiday fanfic challenge.

Two Newsweek articles about the new Narnia movie.

This page of customized super-hero Barbies includes a pretty spiffy-looking Death from Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Also, [livejournal.com profile] endlesscostumes is a community dedicated to costumes of the Endless.

An interview with David Hewlett here. Includes the most embarassing moment of his career.

The website for the game in the latest Terry Pratchett book, Thud. Definitely worth looking at, even if only for the historical perpective on the game, written by Terry Pratchett.

The film short D.E.B.S., that was later turned into a full-length movie, is available online here. Lesbian schoolgirls with guns! I think is stands up better as a film short, actually. (And incidentally, the same site has the short Interview with my Next Girlfriend, with Anne-Marie Macdonald and Cara Pifko from This is Wonderland, among others.

Somewhat late, but a couple of very cool anecdotes, on Rosa Parks and Sojourner Truth.

It's probably old news by now that George Takei (Mr. Sulu on Star Trek) has come out. So has WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoope. And also, James Howe, author of Bunnicula, among other things.

The Altered Art Gallery Cool bits of, well, stuff, turned into art.

Salem Press is giving away "Reference is Cool" buttons.

Ha. Down to one window of tabs, mostly unread or uncommented fic. I've let stuff accumulate, so it's even more of a mixed bunch than usual.

SGA, Public Law My girlfriend's kinda insane, because you'd have to be to concieve of writing a fic about SGA and Canadian politics. That being said, in my not-so-unbiased opinion, she did so beautifully. "You have the president's approval." "I know what I have!" Elizabeth all but shouted. "And until Canada becomes a part of the United States of America, it will always be an independent country. This isn't military, John, this is Canadian politics."

SGA, #435, The Atlantis Local Stitch'n'Bitch Chapter Knitting. Snark. Cadman, Miko, and all the rest of the minor female characters. Rodney. Must be read to be believed. And there's fanart, too!

SGA, Perpetual A small and beautiful little thing about ferris wheels.

SGA, Piecemeal A different take on the "search and seizure" challenege, with a wonderful amount of character and plot and pure, visceral reaction in a short and eloquent (painful) space. Rodney hurts. Cadman helps. (Don't worry, it's gen.)

SGA, Two Left is a punch in the gut story. Horrifingly plausible, and well worth reading.

SGA, Be Cool Something a bit less tragic than the last few links. "Give it a rest, McKay. If you were so concerned about the scientific necessity of selling pot out of the botany labs, why didn’t you bring that up in the staff meeting?"

SGA, Distillation, set mid-"Lost Boys." "His heart pounds in his chest all the time. He can't sleep. His senses are sharper than ever. He smells Wraith everywhere, even on his own skin. The enzyme, the drug, makes him edgy." Mmh, John/Ronon.

Pratchett! A post from [livejournal.com profile] saffic to Monstrous Regiment fanart.

Diana Wynne Jones Fic! Specifically, Eight Days of Luke fic. I am thrilled to find this! David thinks Luke's only out to get him in the latest round of practical jokes...

Bruno & Boots, Love is a Movement "The pith helmet and unit standard (i.e., Bruno's hockey stick with a construction paper sign affixed that reads "REVOLUTION NOW QUESTIONS AFTER LUNCH") is a new low even for Bruno."

More book slash, Nancy Drew. The Clue of the Scribbled Note "I would never dream of upsetting George on purpose, only it's hard to tell what will upset her sometimes because her ideas are so queer."

Due South, Gun, with Occasional Kangaroo: A Love Story There is a gun. Twins. A Kangaroo. And Frannie with a harlequin about Mounties. All the fun absurdity of the series, plus, slash!

Harry Potter, The Last Horcrux Incredibly creepy, with a wonderfully horrible last line.

Harry Potter, Drink Me, more creepiness of the Draco/Ron variety.

Kitchen Confidental, The Queen of England by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock. "At 3 a.m. Wednesday Jack rolls off of the couch, almost causes himself permanent damage, and then creates a whole fucking new seafood dish that has a playful medley of Spanish flavors and the zinging citrus of limes, the verdant flavors of cilantro and the warm, sunny sweetness of roasted sun-dried tomatoes. [...] That night, they serve forty-six orders of lasagna, and it kills a piece of Jack's soul every order up that comes in for it." And yes, it is slash.

Lovely femmeslash, involving planes.

Smallville, Gilgamesh, a conceptually fascinating Smallville WIP, with cultural anthropology and ancient Kryptonian BDSM. Previous parts linked to at the top of the post.

Some X-Files here, All Sorts of Rules, Scully/Fowley. (I'm not looking at [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu, really...)

From the wank going on over at [livejournal.com profile] housefic, I'm glad I unsubbed a while ago, but it can't be all bad since dubious spelling led to these insane little snippets about cannons on House, and about cannnonical relationships.

I can't remember if I've linked to this before or not. Superdickery "An ever growing selection of examples of Superman acting like... well, a dick." Also includes a gallery of Wonderwoman in bondage.

Giant squid in the news! More here, and here. Also, dolphins with guns.

And Danish Air Force Compensates Santa for the death of one of his reindeer.

An excerpt from Anthony Blair, Captain of the School. British politics, the school story!

I think I got this link from [livejournal.com profile] trullsengar, The Fantasy Novelist's Exam. If you answer yes to any of these questions... um, it's not a good thing. And garnered from said page, an interesting site on weights of swords. (This stands out in my mind as the kind of thing [livejournal.com profile] jestyna would find interesting.

Screw Sunscreen is an exquisite and funny and perfect piece on the pleasures of drinking tea.

I had some Firefly and Serenity related links, but I think they deserve their own post. More later.
daemonluna: default icon, me with totoros (Default)
Whole bunch of stuff here, mostly fic recs, but with various and sundry bits and pieces thrown in.

Here's an interview with the actress who played Cadman in the SGA ep "Duet." Interesting tidbit in here about that scene with the sheet...

And lovely little Duet Teyla snippet.

Chaos Theory is SGA fic all with the AUs and alternate selfs, and much fun.

Like Running Through Water As far as McKay was concerned, John was a really nifty remote control for Ancient toys. Some great, sharp Rodney characterization here.

And oh dear, Rodney and phone sex do not make a good combination.

And I Would Be is SGA flashfic for the skirting challenge, and hurts, in the good way. Faggots don't fly.

[livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock has updated her
website
, including some spiffy Bruno & Boots slash, and her SGA AU Hindsight, which is now finished and no longer a WIP.

The Firstlings of the Flock, Good Omens fic in which vegetarianism does not sit well with Crowley.

Some very sparse and lyrical (shut up, the words made sense together in my head) Pirates of the Caribbean fic as recced on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van here.

Ditto for this QAF fic, Growing Up Kinney. Gus is a teenager. And you try finding seating for (let alone explaining) his extended family come graduation.

The Futility of Duty is Due South, Bob-centric fic.

More DS with the post-series Gladly Beyond. All the trademark quirky humour of Due South dead-on, plus some fantastic Ray and Fraser characterization. Especially the bit with the red button.

And look! HCL fic! Honesty is Overrated captures Billy and Joe very succinctly, and ends with the perfect last line.

There's a complete Buffy box set coming out. The bastards.

If you're at all interested you've probably seen it already, but here are the SGA season two opening credits that Sci-Fi cuts when the episode airs. They're kind of disappointing, actually. Very blue.

The German covers for HP and the Half-Blood Prince are spoilerific, but I think the art's cool.

Newspaper editorial gacked from [livejournal.com profile] carlanime, a mother's reflections

Incredibly amazing street art.

Hee, a blog dedicated to the misuse of kanji in Western culture. Hand warmer and Air Conditioner indeed.

And always, there are fannish politics, namely the individual who's asking people to pay her so she can stay at home and write fanfic. An articulate and intelligent response from lj user="cesperanza"> here. I particularily liked:
This isn't fandom. Fandom is not--in my opinion, and despite the constant whining, worried, self-justifying quotes in mediocre newspaper articles--merely a "training ground" for professional writing. Yes, many fan writers become pro-writers, and many people find their writing skills improve as a result of writing fanfic, etc., which is terrific and makes me happy: you go, guys!! Similarly, many fan writers are already pro writers, or English majors, or publishing people, or journalists, or technical writers, or college professors, or--shock!--avid and involved readers, who'd'a thunk. But I believe that that's not why they're fanwriters, and if it IS why they're fanwriters, i.e. purely as a steppingstone to somewhere else, then they're not really in the fannish community

Photos from Animethon are up, and all I can sya is they made Mark a costume with breasts again. And [livejournal.com profile] nekosei has assorted vids he's done on his website, including con opening vids, etc. (I especially like the SakuraCon 2005 vid ([livejournal.com profile] ming_lei and [livejournal.com profile] danmatakizawa as pocky addicts!), and the Animethon 12 AMV opener...)

The Booker award shortlist has been announced. I have not read any of them--oh, no, I lie. I started Never Let You Go, but once I knew the premise, was completely uninterested in finishing the book. (YMMV, especially if you like creepy dystopic concept-driven SF stories.)

And if that isn't enough for you, airborne cats and Stuff on my Cat.
daemonluna: default icon, me with totoros (Default)
Last lj spamming before bed, I promise.

It's been a while since I've done this...

(dumping links from umpteen-zillion open tabs into lj)

Which reader are you...? from the Telegraph, a tongue-in-cheek look at different kinds of summer readers.

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] olympia_m, New Sappho poem discovered, which in and of itself is really kind of amazing.

From Dan Savage, Just in time for Pride Month, advice for 15-year-old fags and dykes from grown up gays and lesbians... Some of the replies make sense, others I don't quite agree with. Anyhow.

On the strange and ironic side, a project to create an android of Phillip K. Dick.

Local folk might find http://www.calgarygasprices.com useful.

On the fannish side, Alias/Bruno & Boots crossover. I am amused, despite not knowing Alias.

New DS community, [livejournal.com profile] dues_research, useful for fic-writing details, etc.

Intersections is SGA fic, set in Atlantis, pre-series, John/Rodney.

And more SGA, Crush. "Will someone explain what this word 'man-crush' means?" Hee.

And Face Value, in which Rodney gets telepathy. With the snark and the pining and all. Fun!

Bushwhacked: Outer space, deviant sexualities, and FIREFLY's fanciest lad is an interesting essay on who else, Simon Tam.

(Incidentally, Jewel Staite, Kaylee, was Da Vinci's daughter on Da Vinci's Inquest. Hmm, and also in X-Files, The Odyssey, and Are You Afraid of the Dark?)

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] simplelyric, season four of Due South is coming out on DVD in September.
daemonluna: default icon, me with totoros (OTP)
We attempted to play the Pretender drinking game with [livejournal.com profile] chaleur23 and [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu this weekend, and all failed abominably at even getting tipsy. I think we started too late at night or something, because there was ample opportunity. That, or we shouldn't have started with the really dramatic season opener ep...

My random links for the day are: a cute little Macdonald Hall fanfic snippet "As Free As the Wind", and for [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu, a Angel/Babysitters Club crossover, and for [livejournal.com profile] deireanach, a completely sex-free yet snarky House fic.

Also, U.S. Army being investigated by Rowling and Warner Bros over a Harry Potter parody comic on preventative maintenance. (And there are captiony things that say things like "Page 3: Using a dry wand..." *snerk*), and there's a new yuri (f/f anime fanfic) fanfic archive, Yuriville. There's only a few stories so far, but I'm hoping some more obscure fandom type stuff will go up.

Still need to show [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu some more This is Wonderland! (pets icon)
daemonluna: default icon, me with totoros (Default)
First off, Conflicts of Interest is the Smallville fic I've been talking about for a couple days, aka, Lex has a nine year old son. Highly amusing. Especially the bit with the powerpoint slides.

And On The Road is a fantastic Bruno and Boots fic by the same author, set a good ten years or more post-series. Bruno! Political campaign manager! Boots! High school English teacher! Angst! Sex!

Both are by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock, and she has easter eggs for the Smallville fic posted in her blog. Like the adorementioned powerpoint slides. Hee.

Some more fic: You Don't Have To Go Home, This rec's for [livejournal.com profile] joan_not_jaon. *g* Highlander/Harry Potter. Remus Lupin meets Amanda.

Wai! More House fic! On the Eight Day

And The Gargantuan Garden is a Lemony Snicket and Edward Scissorhands crossover.

Look, gay penguins!

Girl Power Fuels Manga Boom in U.S. from the New York Times (if you don't want to register, you can go to bugmenot.com to get a log-in and password). Also: Animania!, an article on the rising popularity of anime.

And I leave you with this, a bizarre, sexually suggestive Pocky commerical. I'm going to go crawl into my cozy bed with the nice, clean sheets. (As [livejournal.com profile] naked_bandit can attest, as she was on the phone listening to me get horribly tangled up wrestling the comforter into the quilt cover. "Help, I've lost one of the corners! Now I'm all tangled up in the quilt..." Heh. Anyhow. 'night!)
daemonluna: default icon, me with totoros (Default)
I believe I promised links. So here's the fanfic side of what I've been reading lately.

Mweh. Dark is Rising/Harry Potter crossover. Makes me very happy.

And on the oh-dear-god side of things, first, there's this fun bit of fluff, Queer Eye for the Spike Guy, which is amusing if occasionally makes no sense. And then there's the Joe, You Ignorant Slut crossover challenge. This is me, falling off my chair with much amusement and no little amount of terror. Not in the least because I'm contemplating HCL/Firefly, Joe/Jayne. (C'mon, [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu, I dare you to shock me with a pairing for this!)

And speaking of which, then there's [livejournal.com profile] lynnmonster's Ego Collision, a DS/HCL xover. Mmmmm. Happy me. Then there's [livejournal.com profile] sister_wolf's insane Hippy & Punk: The Amazing Adventures of Blair & Joe.
Part I: Location: Somewhere over Canadian soil
Part II: Location: Somewhere in the Canadian wilderness
Part III: Location: Outside the Secret Lair of the Bad Guys
Part IV: Location: Inside the Secret Lair of the Bad Guys
It's now crossed over with assorted other fandoms, including XF. Happy me, once again!

Also, there's now two lj communities for slashing Gordon Korman books. *snerk* Go check out [livejournal.com profile] exaltedkarpoozi and [livejournal.com profile] scrimmettes. However, be warned, things that bring me great glee may horrify others. Mwaha.
