CBC headline: Discrimination OK when it comes to marriage: Klein

"We will be writing to all Liberal and Conservative members. I'll be writing to the prime minister," Klein said. "I have friends who are gays and friends who are lesbians, and they are wonderful people. "I do feel that gays and lesbians ought not to be discriminated against in any other form other than marriage, because I think that marriage is a sacred thing that exists between a man and a woman."

Up there with showing up drunk at a homeless shelter and telling them to get a job, you lazy bums, and the whole thing with the "you don't look disabled" comment. Blergh.

Well my state banned same-sex non-marriage civil unions and now the conservatives that rammed it through are instigating to have voluntarily-given same-sex domestic partner benefits removed.

Yeah, this province makes me reflect with great regularity on Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land.

And we've got it good. Look at us, living in Liberal or nearly-liberal ridings, in the city and not the fucking cow fields, spending much of our social time with artisits. It just doesn't get any better than this for an Albertan.

The flipside is that we are mowing over all the traditional parts of life worth keeping. Does Klein fight against the loss of the interdependence and community feeling of rural areas? No. Does he fight against the loss of any sustainable agriculture in the face of big-bucks agribusiness? Of course not. He battles a bunch of people who want to get married. Ooooooh, those evil in-love people! Ready to wreck the world with their lovey-doveness! What will we tell our children, if we let them grow up in a world full of... *shudder*... love?

AUGH. I HATEHATEHATE this arguement. "Some of my best friends are ______ but..."

It just goes to show what sort of person he is, what a wonderful friend he really is. Some of my best friends are *people* and not defined by which gender (or both!) they prefer.

Didn't you know that having a gay friend is the "black friend" of the noughties? Especially if your "gay friend" is of the self-loathing variety that votes Reform (or Republican if you're American)--it's all about tokenism, baby!
