As the subjest suggests, we did indeed pick up Pirates of the Caribbean on DVD. Heeeee. Excellent bonus features, including deleted scenes and bloopers. Also, a 1968 clip from a special about the ride opening for the first time. I must say, there's rather a lot more drunkeness than I remember from the *cough* five times we went on through when we were in Disneyland.

So if you're on a pirate kick, you might want to pick up Pirates! by Celia Rees. It's a YA novel, about a young British lass whose father owns a plantation in Jamaica. He dies, her brother's gambling away the family fortune, so he betrothes young Nancy to a rich, sinister Brazilian, captain of one of her father's ships. (The only captain to make it back through a particularily bad storm, starting dark mutterings that he--the Brazillian--is in league with the devil himself.)

Nancy has other plans and waiting for her childhood sweetheart William, who has joined the navy. Anyhow, Nancy has also hit it off with slave girl Minerva and together, they run off and become pirates! There's more background, with Nancy growing up motherless running around by the docks and bribing her brother's tutor into giving her fencing lessons as a wee young slip of a girl, and how co-incidentally one of the officers that befriended her on the voyage from England to Jamaica has also gone "on the account," as they say. But... girls! Pirates! Plundering! I've read some other good and not-so-good stuff lately, more on that later.

Barb's watching a special on Discovery channel about sharks. It took us a good ten minutes to figure out for sure that the reason that the person doing the voice-over sounded so familiar is because it's none other than Paul Gross. Heh.

Incidentally, anybody seen Vision of Escaflowne? And want to give me feedback on a short little bit of fic? It's been sitting on my hard drive for a good four years now, and I'm trying to get it finished, but co-incidentally, it's also been four years if not more since I've seen the series. And no, it's not slash. :P Completely devoid of any sexual subtext whatsoever, believe it or not.

Arrrrrrr!

*leers menacingly at Ophelia*

Tis a fine booty you've got there, me beauty. A weary pirate might be looking to settle down with a haul like that. May be tempted into all kinds of unnecessary acts if it were not handed over smartly.

Arrrrrr!

*sigh* no? not even slightly fearful?

It's a Trille! Hi, Trille! Good to hear from you!

Oh, dear. Now you've incurred the wrath of the Barb. *g* (Who should remember that she's the one who smacked Kaye on the butt last weekend, hmm? *g*)

This all reminds me of the extremely silly days when late-night ICQ chat turned into this whole pirate thing. And lo, we were the crew of the Festering Pit. Hmm. Jet Wolf was the first mate Girn, I ended up the kidnapped maiden tied to the mast, not quite sure how (ask the first mate... [livejournal.com profile] alessar was also crew.. cook, maybe? It was all very odd and ridiculous.
