Bleargh again
Nov. 11th, 2003 01:04 amSo it's looking to be a pretty wretched week so far. Case in point--Barb's laptop apparently has a defective hard drive, according to the not so helpful tech people at Future Shop. There goes the season three Andromeda eps that took three weeks to download. And photos from WorldCon (which were the only photos that hadn't migrated to my computer or onto CD yet). And oh yeah, she may have lost about twenty pages of the stand-alone book she's working on, and her progress to date on
her NaNoWriMo.
Except that she spent the weekend at the IFWA write-off (aka between eight and twenty people spending all weekend in one room writing) which I occasionally wandered in and out of. Interactive Stitch came to play, and distract people. *g* Anyhow, point being that she rewrote most of what she had done, and I happen to think it's a lot better--more focussed, for one, and she's got the world and the overall plot much more firmly in her head.
And she got a nice email from WestJet saying congragulations, we want to hire you, we'll let you know as soon as we have a job for you, okay? And no messages for me at all. Further complications in how the federal government mislaid the record of employment I gave them, but anyhow.
I had three job interviews last week, which I suppose is a good thing. One was a part-time reference assistant at the university law library. The up side--I wouldn't mind some more academic library experience. The down side--it's not a professional librarian position, and it's only part time. And oh yeah, I know absolutely nothing about law libraries. Except somewhere probably from LIS 501, I managed to dredge up the distinction that the law librarian is there to provide information, NOT legal counsel. So anyhow. I was really surprised that they called me for the interview. We'll see. *shrug*
And then I had an interview for the most likely job, the school liason and co-ordinator person for a youth magazine that does journalism workshops. It sounds pretty cool except I'm kinda nervous about the fact that I'd mostly be selling the workshops to the schools. I'm not sure I'm quite aggressive enough and all. And it's only 28-30 hours a week, and while likely not pay large amounts of money. Following my locking the keys in the car last week, this was yet another act in this whole comedy of errors that is my life. Following the phone interview which I responded to on my cel phone sitting at the top of a stairwell in a desperate bid to find somewhere quiet enough on campus where I could actually TALK...
Well, we met Anna for breakfast the day of the interview, and through a mundane and no doubt dull-to-recount series of events, ended up in the north end of the city at 12:30. I was SURE that the interview was at 1:30, and then I double-checked the time, and nooooo, it was at one. So Anna heroically made a mad rush through downtown Calgary at lunchtime, got me there for one, and me still in my jeans since I had meant to go home and change. So yeah. Other than that and previously mentioned misgivings, I think it went pretty well.
The third interview was the next day, and THAT one was at one. And it was in Edmonton, for, y'know, the job I really want, a youth services librarian position, at the public library. I don't think I'll get it--it's a full step up from entry level, and me with my whole ten months experience (vs the 2-5 years they want) and replacing someone who was there for twenty years and left to move up to be a manager.
Which is good, because I really don't want to have to move to Edmonton which depending on how job stuff works out, Barb might have to stay in Calgary. And I am SO sick of this moving every six months game. So I'm really kind of hoping that they pat me on the head and send me on my way. The interview went passably well, despite the fact that.. well, it was in Edmonton, right? And I decided that with three hours in the dar, I was just going to change once I got there. Yeah, you can guess what's coming next. My interview clothes stayed at home, and an hour before the interview found me swapping my sweatshirt with Barb's sweater and being very glad I was not wearing jeans.
Barb gets all sorts of extra-special brownie points for driving up and back the same day. We did made it from the library (in Edmonton) to our apartment (in Cagary) in about 2 hours, thrity-five minutes on the way back. Heh. So she had the write-off at six...
So this is a rather long, rambling mundane post. Just goes to show you how absolutely thrilling my life has been lately. :P I keep meaning to post some Andromeda recs... maybe tomorrow.
