Slashy fannish goodness

It's still way too hot. Bleck. It's been hitting 30C most days for the past three weeks. Fortunately, it's cooling off nicely at night. We wandered down to 17th Ave earlier this evening to get ice cream and a movie. We came back with Picture Claire, two DVDs of Yami no Matsuei aka Descendants of Darkness, and Rose Red. And, of course, ice cream.
Picture Claire was pretty good. (Besides being a Bruce Macdonald film with Callum Keith Rennie in it.) I recall there being some sort of issues around its release, but I can't remember what now for the life of me. It's very Canadian. *g* All minimalist and many downtown Toronto landmarks (which I recognize only by proxy since I haven't been that far east, but that will all change at the end of the month when we go to WorldCon! Wheeee!) It's about a girl from Montreal, Claire, who is looking for an old boyfriend and ends up being mistaken for someone else, and a suspect for a murder she didn't commit.
There was a lot of cool stuff done with visuals and split screens, but the charaacters were very flat. Not stereotypical, and there were a few unexpected bits (especially what I was expecting from Claire) but you just didn't KNOW anyone well enough to care too much what happens to them. I felt like I was just getting the visuals, and was watching without some crucial back story or any sort of insight into the whys and wherefores. I have more to say on CKR's part, but here there be
CKR is a bad-ass in this one. He's chasing after Lily (who people keep mistaking Claire for) to get something, and is fairly ruthless. The big spoiler is, surprise, surprise, he ends up dead. Shot int he head which is fairly ironic if you've seen Hard Core Logo.. Oh, and for those of us who play spot the cast of dS, Dean McDermott, aka Turnbull, had a very brief role as the clerk in the train station. The gallery owner also reminded me of someone, but Barb pointed out that it was probably just Kia from Trading Spaces. Heh.
We watched the first two eps of Yami no Matsuei in all its slashy bishounen supernatural angstiness. (
alessar, if you haven't seen YnoM, you should!) It's all over the top pretty boys, of course, and supernatural stuff, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it in a fluffy sort of way. Bwaha. Kinda CLAMP-ish, but with less angst and 2x4-shadowing. ("Is he Kamui? He can't be Kamui! No, he's not Kamui! Oh wait, maybe he is Kamui after all!")
We've seen Rose Red before, but it freaked Barb out (there's one scene with the dead movie star...) so she picked it up again. *g* I remember wanting to write slash afterwards, or at least find some, but not exactly who... guess we really do need to see it again, then. And hey, cool extras on the DVD that I didn't have time to play with last time we rented it because it was still a new release. Mmmm, exras.
