I've had multiple people lately ask me if I'm on Facebook. I am slightly dubious about committing even more time to yet another website, but the other side of that is keeping in touch with people I don't see that often. And as far as my vague understanding goes, it's not like you have to commit to continually adding content, like a blog.

Also, I have foolishly committed myself to putting together a workshop on libraries and social networking tools and having a passing familiarity with the whole MySpace-Facebook thing would be good. But do I need to actually do it myself?

So, flist, what do you guys think about Facebook?

Well, I'm on Facebook because that's where a lot of my non-fannish friends are. And...I totally don't get it. It's more like Twitter than livejournal, I find. Anyway, when folk friend me I friend 'em back, and I read their posts and look at their pictures...but it certainly hasn't grabbed my imagination. It certainly hasn't consumed me like other websites have and would. So, yeah. Maybe you don't need to worry?

I am being lemming-like and experimenting. I am vaguely curious to see who will find me, but whatever! There's not a lot you can... do with it.

Some of my coworkers are on Facebook. To me, it looks sort of goofy--skewed young and more like a game than journaling or blogging.

There's almost no emphasis on text, and people do goofy things like send each other virtual drinks and... I dunno. I didn't think it looked like it was worth my time.

I wonder if that's part of the appeal, that unlike a blog or such you don't have to DO anything with it.

I'm kind of leery about that, too. I am giving it nothing I would not mind my current or potential employer finding... *eyes Facebook dubiously*

I tried Facebook out, briefly, but....I am also disinclined to put more time in online than I do already. And like [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu, I didn't find it very compelling. But possibly you get a skewed response from a LiveJournal audience on this question. :) I know someone who deleted her LJ after joining Facebook, but she didn't post that often anyway, so maybe the text-oriented aspect of LJ was not a draw for her the way it is for me - I imagine Facebook would be more appealing for people who aren't into the blogging part of LJ and just want the socializing.

Yeah, it's kind of... well, I added some widgety things, now what do I actually DO with it? We shall see...

I have a Facebook because I've been following referral links to some of my pages ... and that's it. I'm just not impressed in any way with anything Facebook has to offer.

But I also loathe MySpace (despite having one of those too), so take that as you will.

Yeah, I'm partly playing with it because I've read about various libraries creating MySpace and Facebook pages, usually as part of the teen section of their website. (And guess what, we're getting a teen page on our website! And guess who will be providing 99% of the content...) I figure I should at least have a passing familiarity with it first.

I JUST signed onto Facebook last night, because some Disney mates nagged me and nagged me and nagged me to.
I find it's okay - it's a neat cross between Myspace and LinkedIn.
I imagine I'll use mine to keep in touch with Disney people.

This is part of the reason I signed up, too. I've gotta say, it will be an interesting social experiment if nothing else! *g*

For paranoid conspiracy theorists, FaceBook is the CSM. Zero privacy, ad building, piggy-backing... frightful. ymmv.

Some of us *like* the CSM. Particularily CSM/K.

Yeah, I am slightly dubious. (Yet still making a lemming-like leap...)

It has the critical mass of users that makes it quite useful, in my opinion. I.e. everyone's on it because everyone else is on it. I first joined because people I knew were joining, but then I started hearing from old friends I hadn't heard from in more than 15 years.

When I first joined facebook I didn't see what the excitement was all about, but it grew on me as I learned more about it. The add-on applications (e.g. photo galleries, Where I've Been, Catbook *cough*) are what make it more interesting.

As far as privacy goes, you actually do have quite a bit of control over who sees what.

I find I'm checking LJ less and less often in favor of Facebook, but YMMV.

Yeah, I'm interested to see who else I know that I'll stumble across. Also, to see your kitty pictures!
