There seem to be two default settings for alien cultures and homosexuality, at least as far as it goes in most SGA fic so far. Either they're completely accepting, or totally homophobic. (I realize this is a gross overgeneralization, and can't think of specific fic to support this hypothesis to save my life, but it's the vague impression that's lodged itself in my brain. Also, I don't think I've read any Teyla plays yenta fics, but I'm sure there's some out there.) I know that's not strictly true, especially with slavefic challenge on
sga_flashfic.
Does anyone has recs for SGA fic with interesting alien culture gender politics--especially featuring recurring aliens, like the Athosians or the Genii? Because I've got these WIPS (including Sora/Teyla) that so far are only in my head.
Okay. Here's what I'm thinking (because if the usual happens, it will take me months to write it): The Genii are a military culture. while there is a generic agrarian culture on the surface, it's all very Spartan down in the bunkers. Not in a decorating sense, but there are barracks, and there is gender segregation, and while pairing off into family units does occur (though I'm not sure to what extent), there are plenty of liasons of varying degrees of commitment and seriousness in the ranks. (Am I correct in thinking that it was the Spartans that believed that soldiers taking each other as lovers made them fight all the harder to defend their beloved, etc, etc? I should dig out assorted textbooks and check.)
This, of course, is all just set-up for teenage Sora and only a few years older Teyla and the pseudo-harvest festival, with the alcohol and its due consumption, and the smooching...
Meanwhile, over among the Athosians... Teyla is the leader of her people. It's an inherited title (And it's irrelevant whether it goes to the oldest child or the first son, etc, because she's the only surviving child. Maybe the oldest child?) so it's of some importance that she reproduce. However. Those women in what we would consider traditionally male roles (ie, warrior, anything physically involved and/or dangerous where being pregnant would interfere with their work, or their work would possibly endanger the preganancy) are expected to take a wife to bear their children. It's the traditional role of the brother or other male relative to father said child, though given the ongoing risk of wraith culling and high mortality rates, genetic inheritance isn't necessary. Also if Teyla as the leader were to become pregnant, then there would be a potential conflict of interest on a biological level, between her need to protect her offspring and her duty to protect her people as a whole.
Wacky hijinxes involving arranged marriages ensue.
("Dr. Beckett. Can you determine if interbreeding would be possible between our people? I must know of any inherited risks."
"This is... sudden. Are congragulations in order?"
"Yes. I am to be married, and as I have no surviving male relatives, I am contemplating asking John to couple with my intended wife.)
I need a SGA icon. Also,
queenzulu and I have zedpms listed as a lj interest.
