Hench/Ask A Manager: my wife doesn't know I hench, by whetherwoman
Jan. 16th, 2026 11:51 pmFandom: Hench, Ask A Manager Blog
Pairings/Characters:
Rating: teen
Length: 2k
Creator Links:
Theme: crack taken seriously, superpowers, small fandoms, secret identities, crossovers
Summary: It's hench week at Ask a Manager!
Reccer's Notes: Ask a Manager is an advice column for workplace issues, and Hench is a comic about henchmen. This hilarious story is a series of good advice for both evil henchmen and people who manage evil henchmen, dealing with all sorts of workplace hazards ranging from the aftermath of sex pollen to how to manage someone who is using their evil to annoy their own team and beyond. It's amazing and funny whether you know either canon or not.
Fanwork Links: my wife doesn't know I hench, the evil sex ray made my employees do it, and more
Mods, I need some fandom tags.

SGA: Rodney's Bad Day by boochicken
Jan. 17th, 2026 12:12 amFandom: Stargate Atlantis'
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Elizabeth Weir, Carson Beckett, Radek Zelenka
Rating: Explicit eventually
Length: ~33,000
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings, mentions of blood
Creator Links: boochicken on LJ
Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friends to lovers, First time, Vampires, Action/adventure
Summary: none
Reccer's Notes: Rodney gets turned into a vampire by rogue technology on a mission. This is crack taken seriously as there's no fantasy element, and for the initial part Rodney himself is adamant that vampires don't exist. The story takes this premise and plays it out in a canon setting, with Rodney having to develop coping methods for the downsides - like bursting into flame in sunlight (his super sunblock helps a bit), and accessing a supply of blood. Apart from the blood drinking and risk of immolation (and not having a pulse) he's very much his usual self, and, as ever, even manages to save the day despite these problems. It's a delightful story with lots of plot and action, and a friends to lovers romance with John. Gripping, and very well written!

Star Wars: Your Heartbeat's a Countdown by always_a_slut_for_hc
Jan. 15th, 2026 10:31 amFandom: Star Wars Clone Wars era
Pairings/Characters: All the Clone Commanders and the Jedi Council so:
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Plo Koon, Aayla Secura, Depa Billaba, Quinlan Vos, Anakin Skywalker, Yoda, CC-5052 | Bly, CC-2224 | Cody, CC-3636 | Wolffe, CC-1004 | Gree, CC-1010 | Fox, CT-7567 | Rex, Doom, Monnk, CC-8826 | Neyo, CC-1138 | Bacara, CC-6454 | Ponds
Rating: Gen
Length: 4,700 words podfic is 29min 10s
Creator Links: written by always_a_slut_for_hc
Podfic done by PolynomialPandemic
Theme: Crack Treated Seriously, angst (with a happy ending), crack, fix-it, humour
Summary: The Jedi Council was nervous. The Jedi Council was very, very nervous, so much so that the usual meditation-and-releasing-emotions-into-the-Force shtick had failed and High General Mace Windu had broken out the spotchka.
If anything called for drinks, it was discovering that your whole Order was sitting on a primed thermal detonator - well. More like a million of them.
Reccer's Notes: A bit less Crack-Treated-Seriously and a bit more Serious-Treated-Crackily. Starts out super funny, veers into heartbreaking, and then swings right back to being funny again. I love the attention to detail that makes every single character (and there are a lot) feel unique and in character even if they only get a couple lines. The Clone Commanders chat is also super fun and is a feature I've seen used before but never so well with so many characters.

Theme: Crack Treated Seriously
Summary: In this house we respect the Jedi Order, the Force, and our Very Holy General Kenobi (peace be upon his beard).
Obi-Wan is back on Coruscant. Wary, famished, and deeply not ready for what’s waiting.
He thought the clones would hate him. Instead?
They built shrines.
They quote his sass like scripture.
And someone really needs to stop printing stickers.
Featuring: false sightings, reverent memes, emotional breakdowns, and a commander who never stopped waiting.
Reccer's Notes: A very fun fic which mixes modern media fandom things (e.g. the clones have a kind of Discord chat), a fix-it AU (well...some things are fixed, anyway), and heartfelt feelings platonic and otherwise.

let’s have a sillu update
Jan. 13th, 2026 07:51 am(Context: Grelse is my sister-in-law and now roommate/house and child rearing support!)
Grelse: so on The Pit—-
L: what’s that?
Grelse: it’s a show about a doctor
L: the autistic one or the one with a cane?
Me: okay hearing you say that is SENDING me
(More context! I canonically met
zulu in House fandom. And good thing too because we never EVER overlapped in any other fandoms 😝 Anyway—-)
Me: hey, bud, you remember that Zulu and I knew each other through fandom? Well, we were both writing fic for House, so that’s How I Met Your Mama
L: oh, huh
Me: Imma have to tell Dreamwidth this L update
L: L?
Me: you know, the nickname Mama and I use for you online
L: /affronted hand to chest/ I am OFFENDED
Me: ???? What would you prefer to be called?
L: Blobby :)
Me: /laughs/ okay, I’ll call you Blobby from now on
Blobby: good!
He turned 11 last week, y’all. And the three of us have just started season 2 of ST:TNG. It’s surreal.

Books in 2025
Jan. 11th, 2026 03:46 pmI didn't keep good track of what I read in 2025, so I might be missing some things here.
As for books I bound in 2025, my favorites are the couple of bamboo-strip-spine sets I made: The Imperial Uncle and Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know. The first was done as an experiment and I liked the result enough to do it again!
- 23 books, about a 50/50 split between cnovels and non-cnovels
- Enjoyed most of them! Looking over my list, there were two that I finished but should have dropped: Evil Weapon's Self-Cultivation (Cyan Wings' so-far only miss for me, it was way too much 'watch this guy be awesome at the expense of everyone else') and Daughter of the Moon Goddess (I think I was not the right audience for this book).
- The winners of the cnovel bracket: Guardian and How Dare You, they're completely different but both of them grabbed me and didn't want to let me go.
- Winners of the non-cnovels: Spiderlight (Adrian Tchaikovsky) and HMS Surprise (Patrick O'Brian) series. I did not start the Aubrey/Maturin series this year and still don't intend to read them all at once but I'm definitely going to continue, and I'm going to read more by Adrian Tchaikovsky as well.

This seems unfair
Jan. 10th, 2026 03:56 pmIMO vigils and protests shouldn’t cost spoons.
Also when you’re already deep in spoon deficit spending it’s probably not an ideal time to go to the spoon loan shark. They charge a lot.
Anyway my heart will always be here for protest medics who can be trusted to have instant cold packs. ❤️🔥
(I’m going to leave comments open on this post, which contains no requests for advice. I trust none of you will make me regret it.)
