Wondering how often they can just shuffle people around at the public library without hiring anyone new. Specifically, me. Two internal vacancies down to one... dammit. Job-related angst, what else is new? It's just one of those weeks where the possibility of actually doing what I WANT to be doing seems impossibly far away. And I'm in a very good position if I were actually remotely interested in the oil and gas industry or the business sector, when really it just gives me moral qualms and makes me break out in hives of boredom.

(I miss book displays. I do pretty damn good book displays, when given the chance. Give me a random thematic link and some construction paper, and I'm good to go. Or booklists and bibliographies. I like creating pathfinders. Or booktalking. Now I'm just depressing myself with everything I'm not doing, in exchange for serial check-ins, geology conference proceedings, and trying to get through to talk to a real person at the Energy and Utilities Board. It pays the bills. It could be worse. But it's still not where I want to be.)

I was almost asleep. *sigh* And I'd go read for a while except I know I'd then stay up until I finished the book. Because I've been lent an advance reviewer's copy of the new Diana Wynne Jones book! (does the happy meeple dance) It's a new Chrestomanci book, which makes me Very Happy.

However. I turned on my computer today and it made horrible grinding sounds. I then opened the case, determined that it was coming from one of the hard drives, and hastily unplugged it (fortunately it was the little 10gig drive that I've just been storing media files on), and later will try plugging it bak in and seeing if I can yank anything off it. Grumble.

Project Proposal....

I have an interesting proposal for you....

The costume storage here at the college is a mess; there is now way of knowing what we have or what is out on loan, etc...

Would you be interested in cataloguing costumes and developing or recommending a library system that we could use to loan them out?

Hmm... definitely interesting. My recommendation would be to create a bastard stepchild of museum and archives-type cataloguing, since it's designed to catalogue physical objects in particular, vs merely identifying the object and capturing the information it contains. That is, if it's large enough that you need some kind of formal system.

You'd need a way to identify each unique item ("The sign-out sheet says "red dress," but we have eight diffferent red dresses and five of them are missing!), and tag them for sign-out. And possibly some sort of classification scheme so that if you need to find all of the, say, Victorian period costumes, or all the blue wigs , you can look it up. A policy, or quick step-by-step for adding new items and getting rid of old ones. And some sort of check in place to retrieve stuff that's gone out.

I'd also suggest doing it between semesters, when there's minimal traffic and most everything is back.
