I'm having a nice, quiet sort of birthday today. Went over to my parents' for cake last night, and my girl said she'd take me out for sushi, though I suspect that it's going to have to wait until Tues, what with the holiday Monday and all. (Happy turkey day, everyone!)

I've got a new addiction! Why didn't anybody TELL me I could find manga online?? Mmm, scanlationicious. Filling up my hard drive and back to reading off the computer screen again.

Wai! Wai! Koko wa reenwood manga! Greenwood is a six-episode OAV series based on a longer manga (10? 12? volumes) about the "wierd" dorm in a boys' boarding school. Fluffy, slashy goodness! Pretty boys! Nosebleeds! Transvestites! And while you're at it, go read The Best Policy by Torch.

If that's not angsty enough for you, try another boys' boarding school, in Song of the Wind and Trees. This is one of those hugely influential type manga--I came across it in either Manga! Manga! or Dreamland Japan (and if you're at all interested in manga and haven't read either of the aforementioned books, I strongly suggest hunting them down!) It was one of the first shounen ai (lit. "boys' love", aimed at girls) titles back in the seventies. Expect lots of waif-like boys with very sparkly eyes, and oh yeah, the school slut who sleeps around and gets abused and has a tragic backstory and our young, pure pov character who also has a tragic backstory and is assigned to a room with said slut, Gilbert. Angst! Melodrama! Much ravishing! Hee.

And over here, more slahsy stuff and ooh, Kaori Yuki manga! Not Angel Sanctuary (I think somebody has the North American rights for that--Tokyo Pop?), but Count Cain which I still have to read. I did finish one short story by her, Blood Hound. Pretty-boy vampires, hee again.

Thiiiis is going to keep me occupied for a while. I haven't even started to explore any of the obscure stuff out there. And here I've got a bunch of new fiction to rant about too. But that will have to wait until tomorrow. And downloading more manga will have to wait until I can burn some of this to CD. Heh.

hope it's a fabulous day, full of all the best for one of the best people I know.

and happy thanksgiving, as well.

I'm becoming quite intrigued by manga; got any hints as to where a newbie should begin?

Hmmm... that depends. What kind of manga do you want? *g* Angsty? Slashy? Fantasy? Realistic? You could try Here is Greenwood, which is lots of fun. Try some of the stuff on Sakura Crisis to start, too.

hmmm, slashy is a always a good thing; and I'm a major fantasy fan, so that holds promise.

the only manga I'm really becoming familiar with is FAKE, which I adore. I've got the first 2 manga in hand, have #3 & 4 ordered, and have a VHS copy of the anime.

thanks for the tips - I'll check them out soon.
