er, and if I wasn't scoffing sunflower seeds and dropping them all over myself, I'm sure I would have been able to spell "scrotum". Or would I???

I've read the book and really, it's not at all a gratuitous use of the word. It's another example of how the main character takes certain things and runs with them without understanding what she's worrying about.
