So Stephen Harper is now saying that the Bloc Québécois's vote on Bill C-38 (legalizing same-sex marriage) shouldn't count, because they're separatists. Nyah, nyah, nyah. (Actually, what he said was when it passes it'll "lack legitimacy.")

Harper branded Bill C-38 the product of an illegitimate union. "I think because this bill is only being passed with the support of the BQ, I think it will lack legitimacy with most Canadians. The truth is most federalist MPs will oppose this legislation," he said.

Yeah. Sure, Stephen. (Also, "illegitimate union?" Up there with "premature election.")

And what does the Bloc say?

BQ MP Richard Marceau says equating an issue of equality rights with Quebec separation is unbelievable. "I would say to Stephen Harper, 'Stephen take a break you need one. Forget the barbecues, you need to go home and relax.'"

"Blacks in the United States," said Epp, "never asked to be called white. They just wanted the same rights." Epp then went on to say that women in Canada sought equal rights without demanding to be called men."

No. Really. What the fucking hell, yo?

Ahh, I totally forgot to quote that part!

Yeah, and gay people aren't being asked to be called straight. That's like saying "we don't have to send black kids to the same school as white kids, or let them use the same water fountains" not "black people never asked to be called white."

The suggestion that Québéc's Members of Parliament have no valid voice in Parliament is completely ludicrous, in my opinion. The Bloc Québécois represents the people of Québéc, which includes frustration with the federal model. Are Albertans similarly dissatisfied with the control of Ottawa similarly invalidated? No.

All this is is Stephen Harper trying to find any angle to try to rub the bill in the dirt. Damn him! He waves and prods the Grits saying that Paul Martin will make any deal to get his end.. Stephen Harper seems no better. Pot, meet Kettle. In fact, he's worse -- at least the Liberals are actually trying to DO something for this country.

As a married heterosexual, I truly don't understand the view being taken by a lot of people. Will my gay co-worker getting married invalidate my marriage? Not particularly. Maybe these people who complain should spend more time with their own families, as heterosexuals seem to have obliterated the institution of marriage without any help, what with the 50% divorce rate...

*g* I thought it was good advice...

You must be right about the lover's quarrel, though. Spurned! Totally!

I think Stephen Harper is crazy. That's the only way to explain the things he says, and all the sense they're not making.

I don't get the whole "in defense of marriage" crap, either. It's not like the bill's making it mandatory for everyone to marry someone of the same sex. Geez.

I recently tried this argument out on my mother (who is somewhere to the right of George W). I pointed out that the only people who could defend the sanctity of marriage were the married couple, and that no-fault divorce and common-law relationships had already done far more to "erode" the specialness of marriage than allowing gay people to marry would every do. She really didn't know what to say to that...

If two people love each other, and are willing to make the committment, why the hell not? I've seen plenty of gay/lesbian relationships that are far more stable than the hetero ones.
