Oh, the stupidity...

I have had my current computer desk for several years. And every time I open the CD drive, I think "Hmm, that's at knee-height... really glad I didn't turn suddenly and end up with no CD drive..." (You can guess what's coming.)

Last week, I got a new (old) computer from a friend. (And thanks, assorted people, for the suggestions on transferring email even though, I er, haven't gotten to it yet.) The CD R/W drive on my old machine had been only sort of trying to burn CDs for a while, and would cut out several seconds from the end. Moot point, I have a new computer! With a working CD R/W drive that yeah, does most verily R and W!

And I can run Itunes (which was not happening on Win98), and make shiny MP3s off CD and mix many strange things together, and [livejournal.com profile] cguy has burned me a copy of all the music from the ASAPA Halloween dance on many CDs, for which I will replay him in fudge. The DVD drive isn't working, but that's not terribly urgent.

All is good.

Until about twenty minutes ago.

When I opened the drive, got up to grab a CD, and knocked it with my knee.

Now it won't close.

Dammit.

I didn't realize you didn't have a working CD RW drive all this time. Let me stress, I just paid $60 US for a DVD RW/CD RW drive. It's annoying, but if you go mail order you can get a cheap replacement drive for around $35-50 US.

It was working with R/W discs... sometimes. And from the error messages I was getting, I was pretty sure it was a software/windows thing, not a hardware problem. *sigh* So nothing to do but replace it?
