Your PSA of the moment

Info on the library currently looking for donations to its meagre teen collection can be found here. They're taking donated books, and donations via an amazon wish list.

(I did post a link to this a couple weeks ago, but a certain author said he was willing to donate his YA books, and would he mind passing the info along to any other authors who might be willing to do the same?)

Seriously, it's an awesome opportunity to spend $10 and get current sexual heath info, GLBT books, or anything else you feel is important into the hands of a small, rural American library where it wouldn't otherwise be available. (And if you want to know which ones are the GLBT teen books, lemme know.) They haven't gotten much SF or fantasy, or many "guy" books, either.

I don't usually spam my lj with this kind of thing and am definitely not trying to pressure anyone into anything, but I think it's worthwhile, and is very grassroots insofar that it's mostly the work of one person at the library, volunteering her time and effort. So feel free to link or repost if you so desire.

In conclusion, relevant and up to date books, good! No money for books and outdated collection, bad!

Hey, just to let you know, I passed on a link to this post in my LJ. Hope that helps spread the word a bit.

I just bought 4 titles off the wish list: Jack, Bad Boy, Elsewhere (all of which I adore) and Someone Like You which sounded good to me, even if I'm not familiar with it.

I'm also going to take a look at my book collection and see if I've duplicates or titles I can live without. if so, I'll be sending them along as well.

I'll try to share this info with my friendslist on my next post - it's a fabulous thing which deserves to be more widely known.

I went looking for titles I knew and liked, specially queer and/or fantasy books. the last is the only one with which I wasn't familiar, but it sounded good. I just didn't have time to keep searching the amazon wishlist, and wanted at least one title dealing with young lesbians.

love love love your booky icons! I need more - sometimes, two just isn't enough

Actually, I don't think that's one with lesbian characters. I'm not entirely sure, but I think they really are just friends. Still a good choice, though! So I went compulsively go through the list and added all the GLBT ones to my post. Heh. There are twice as many gay titles as lesbian, but that's more indicative of what's out there than anything else. And thanks for reposting the links! *hugs*

Sometimes you can find booky icons on [livejournal.com profile] book_icons, though a lot of them are based on specific books. I've snagged a bunch of images from the New York Public Library's Digital Gallery, which is truly amazing to browse through.

I went to look, and am less inclined to donate because she has popup ads that ignore my "don't show popups" setting on that site :P. It is a good cause though, you are totally right, so I probably will anyway. But ordinarily I would completely say no to anything like that :P.

[identity profile] daemonluna.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure the pop-up ads are because she's using a free web host (Tripod?), and it's out of her control. (I don't know if her library even has a website--it sounds like two of the other libraries in the same county still use card catalogues.)

And I really don't want you to feel pressured to donate or anything. You can't donate to everything! But if you'd like to, that would also be cool.
